Former Barca president reveals €400m offer for Messi

Former Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu revealed that a club offered €400 million for Lionel Messi, with funds from an Arab country transferred to Europe to secure the deal.

Speaking to Cadena SER, Bartomeu explained that following Neymar’s departure, rumors surfaced of a record-breaking bid. He confirmed that while a team was willing to pay the €400m release clause, it was not Manchester City.

To prevent the transfer, Barcelona acted quickly by discussing the situation with Messi and his father. Consequently, the club raised Messi's release clause from €400m to a record €700m and increased his salary. afrikasportnews.co.za
